Alpacas are primarily herbivores, and their digestive system is perfectly designed for a fiber-rich diet. Their main staples are high-quality grass and hay. They love grazing on pastures, keeping them nicely trimmed!

When pasture isn’t abundant, especially in winter, good quality hay becomes crucial. It provides the essential long-stemmed fiber they need for a healthy digestive system. Remember, 85-90% of their daily intake should be long-stem forage!

While grass and hay form the foundation, alpacas also need supplementary vitamins and minerals. Specially formulated alpaca pellets and mineral mixes ensure they get everything they need, like Vitamin D, which is often deficient, especially in winter. And, of course, fresh, clean water must always be available!

Now, for the “don’ts!” It’s vital to avoid feeding alpacas toxic plants like rhododendron, azalea, or yew. Also, steer clear of garden waste or grass clippings, as these can cause serious digestive issues. Rich foods like too much alfalfa should be given cautiously and only when needed, as their bodies are efficient at extracting nutrients.
