Why Isn’t Your Heart on Your Left Side? (And Where It Really Is!)

Ever wondered exactly where your heart beats? It’s a question many of us get wrong!

While it often feels like it’s on the left, your heart is actually located almost in the center of your chest, directly behind your breastbone, also known as the sternum.

The common belief that it’s entirely on the left side is a widespread misconception, probably because you can often feel your heartbeat more strongly there.

The reason for this feeling is that the bottom, pointed end of your heart, called the apex, is tilted slightly towards your left side, and it’s where the strongest contractions occur.

So, next time someone asks, remember: your amazing heart is mostly central, just a little bit tilted to the left. Pretty cool, right?
