What Fruits Can Dogs Eat? (And Which to AVOID!)

Hey pet parents! Have you ever wondered if you can share your fruity snacks with your furry best friend? It’s a common question, and the answer is yes, but with some important caveats!

Before offering any fruit, always wash it thoroughly and remove ALL seeds, pits, stems, and rinds. These can be choking hazards or even contain toxic compounds. Always cut fruit into small, bite-sized pieces, and remember, fruit should only be an occasional treat, making up no more than ten percent of your dog’s daily calories.

First up, apples! Yes, dogs can enjoy apples, and they’re packed with vitamins A and C, fiber, and antioxidants. Just be sure to remove the core and ALL seeds, as apple seeds contain small amounts of cyanide.

Next, bananas! These are great in moderation, offering potassium, fiber, and vitamins B6 and C. Because they’re higher in natural sugars, give them sparingly, and never feed the peel, as it’s hard to digest.

Blueberries are another fantastic option! These tiny powerhouses are full of antioxidants and are low in calories, making them a super healthy and sweet reward for your pup.

On a hot day, watermelon can be a refreshing treat! It’s mostly water, which helps with hydration, and contains vitamins A, B6, and C. Crucially, always remove the rind and any seeds before serving.

Now, for the critical part: some fruits are absolutely toxic and must be avoided. Never, ever give your dog grapes or raisins, as they can cause sudden kidney failure. Cherries are also a no-go, due to cyanide in their pits, stems, and leaves. And while healthy for us, avocados contain a substance called persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs, so keep them away from your canine companion.
