This upset France, who, led by Napoleon the Third, decided to invade Mexico! But on May 5th, 1862, near the city of Puebla, a smaller, less-equipped Mexican army, full of courage, faced off against the mighty French forces. And you know what? They won!
This victory at the Battle of Puebla was a huge morale boost for Mexico. It wasn’t the end of the war, but it became a powerful symbol of national pride and resistance. Today, in Mexico, it’s mostly a regional holiday, especially in Puebla, with military parades.
But in the United States, it became a much bigger deal! Mexican-American communities started celebrating it as early as the 1860s to honor their heritage. It really took off in the 1960s with the Chicano movement, becoming a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture, history, and pride!
